People quote that phrase all the time—“in the world but not of it”—but most don’t actually know what it means. The Church turned that into something that keeps you out of the world and stuck in a building. Like holiness means isolation. Like separation equals righteousness. But that was never the point.
All of creation is groaning for the manifestation of the sons of God. Not their attendance records. Not their services. Not their buildings. The world isn’t waiting for people to hide from it. The world is waiting for illumination. We were never called to escape the world—we were called to light it up.
The Holy Spirit told me one day, early on when I was learning to listen:
“The Church can become a prison.”
And it has for a lot of people.
It becomes a club instead of a body.
A safe place instead of a sending place.
A place to retreat instead of a place to be trained and released.
Church was supposed to be where you edify one another, strengthen one another, sharpen one another—and then go back into the world carrying the image of Elohim, carrying love, carrying restoration, carrying healing. Not hiding from people… but becoming the answer for people.
You can still be in church and still be conformed to the world if you’re living from the outside in. Because if you’re not being conformed by the Logos and the Spirit, you’re being conformed by something else. And even if it looks “good,” that doesn’t mean it’s life.
That’s the danger of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
Something can look good…
Sound good…
Feel moral…
And still lead to death—
if you’re not living from the Logos.
You can still be living by the law of sin and death and doing “good” things. You can still be religious and totally disconnected from life. You can still be busy for God and never actually be with God. That’s living from the outside in.
Being “not of the world” doesn’t mean you withdraw from it.
It means the world doesn’t get to shape you from the outside anymore.
It means you live from the inside out.
It means the Logos is your source.
The Spirit is your guide.
And love is your evidence.
You were never meant to escape the world.
You were meant to illuminate it.
“I did not hide you from the world—
I planted you in it.
Shine where you stand,
and the prison doors will fall
for many who never knew
they were locked in.”
