The Lord has revealed with many illustrations from the Scriptures the intensity He wants in our spirit: how aggressive and violent, how ruthless and relentless our spirit is to be as it pursues after the Lord.
God never intended that man should be anything other than a triune nature. We are not trying to reach some nirvana state where only our spirit is functioning and our body is placed in a deep freeze awaiting the rapture. Because we were made in the image of God, we are not only spirit—we are a triune being.
We should be able to function more effectively, with better health physically when our spirit is in tune with God. The body should also give support to the spirit.
We should find also that when we are truly spiritual beings (when our soul is fed by the spirit), a great deal of the confused, lawless emotions are immediately brought under control. Our soul and our body should also serve the objectives and the expression of our spirit before the Lord.
When we read David’s Psalms we note that some were swearing. Others, such as “The Lord is my Shepherd,” express a sweet and gentle eloquence. David was a versatile man in his spirit; he was an outstanding prophet, full of love, who could fight a troop and leap a wall. David’s worship varied: some of it was sweet and soft, some seemed to be pure spirit, while often it was explosive. On one occasion he forgot all about his royal dignity, as he tossed aside his clothes and danced before the Lord. His wife, who was very scornful of the situation, complained, “You made a fool of yourself today.” His answer was, “I’ll be more of a fool in my own sight.” How violent he could be in the way he expressed it.
This can help us in this day. If you feel that you can’t quite relate yourself to the intensity of shouting prayers let me remind you that all of this will pass. Everything of travail is a temporary state. Any mother will tell you she doesn’t intend to prolong the process of giving birth to her baby for the next ten years. It’s a painful situation and she intends to get it over with as soon as she can. After that other things need her attention as she cares for its many needs, but always one step at a time. We are in labor, in travail, but our battles are a temporary state at the present time. As we move on into the fullness of the Lord there will be periods of sweet singing; feast days will come when there will be nothing but sweet psalms, songs of praise and adoration all the day long.
Now we have pain; we must be delivered, and so we travail on in the spirit and we give praise and rejoicing; but we’re not travailing in despair or feeling sorry for ourselves. The glory and wonder is that we’re in this, because what God intends for us to bring forth in the earth is with great promise; and it’s with a great deal of inner witness that we are a Remnant of God destined to do these things and to bring them forth in the earth with all faith and diligence.
