If following God feels like a cage…it’s not God

Brenda Carriere Nash

As I’ve been engaging with the Spirit of Knowledge, He’s been making one thing unmistakably clear: we get one life. So I’m choosing to spend mine in the freedom of Christ, not contorting my soul to fit someone else’s fear-based theology, where control gets renamed “covering,” shaming gets called “submission,” intimidation gets marketed as “accountability,” and legalism is dressed up as “truth.” I’ve seen “holiness” reduced to sin management and behavior modification, while watching the cycle of that belief spiral people into depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. That’s not the fruit of Jesus. Holiness is Christ formed in us, His love that purifies, peace that steadies, and power that transforms from the inside out.

This is personal, because I’ve lived inside environments where spiritual control tried to shrink my voice and override discernment, and I’m saying it out loud because it’s affecting more believers than people realize. But the fruit told the truth: pressure and manipulation never produce Jesus; they produce fear, performance, and silence. So I’m not bowing to cover-up culture, people-pleasing, or Scripture weaponized to accuse and control. I’m yielding to Christ, and the more I yield, the more life rises in me: peace without striving, love without performing, authority without domination, and a supernatural spiritual flow that feels like resurrected breath.

And that’s why I can’t go back to a “gospel” that shrinks souls when the real gospel is GOOD news; the gospel of GRACE and PEACE. So my friends, if what we’ve been handed feels like a cage, it may be time to stop calling it “God” because where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom —Selah
