lived: 450 to 523.
Renowned for her generosity and hospitality, this Irish Saint was also wonderfully prophetic. And a prophecy eerily similar to one given by her contemporary, Saint Patrick, she foretold the ministry of Saint Columba, even giving the saints Irish name and mother’s identity: the man-child of longsided Ethne, as a sage he is a blossoming. Columcille, pure without blemish. It is not oversoon to perceive him.
As a child, Brigid was taken by the Holy Spirit to Bethlehem. It was an experience that changed her life.
When she was young, she would give her father’s personal belongings and food to the poor. No matter how many times her father told her not to, she would give away clothing, pottery, and food to anyone who needed it more than she did. Her father became so frustrated that he decided to sell her to a king. He left her at the castle gate while he went in and discussed a price. Meanwhile, out at the gate, Brigid was approached by a beggar, asking for money. She gave the poor man her father’s sword. Her dad and the king were amazed. The king wouldn’t buy her, saying: she is too good for me-I could never win her obedience.
In an age where women had little authority, God gave Brigid hers. When the time came for Brigid to become a nun, she and a group of women asked Bishop Mel to bless them. Brigid was silent out of humility and respect before the great leader. But as the Bishop prayed, he saw the Spirit of God descend on her. He called her out: I have no power in this matter, the Bishop said. God hath ordained Bridget.
She said-May God our father, our strength and light, bless you beyond all you would ask. For the weather is always right for the sowing of good seed.
