Who are the sons of God

Who Are the Sons of God—and Who Are Not?

Scripture is clear: everyone is created by God, but not everyone is a son of God.

Sonship is not automatic.

It is revealed by who you obey.

“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”

— John 1:12 (NIV)

Sonship is granted, not assumed.

THE SONS OF GOD

The Bible defines the sons of God clearly:

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”

— Romans 8:14 (NIV)

Sons of God are:

• Led by the Spirit

• Submitted to truth

• Convicted by sin

• Corrected by the Word

• Marked by repentance, not perfection

They don’t just profess Christ — they follow Him.

“Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.”

— 1 John 2:6 (NIV)

Sonship is not about church attendance.

It is about likeness.

“Those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.”

— Romans 8:29 (NIV)

THE TEST OF FRUIT

Jesus did not say, “You will know them by their gifts.”

He said:

“By their fruit you will recognize them.”

— Matthew 7:16 (NIV)

Fruit reveals:

• Who you belong to

• Who you listen to

• Who governs your life

A tree cannot hide its root forever.

THE SONS OF THE DEVIL (STRAIGHT FROM SCRIPTURE)

This is where many get uncomfortable — but Jesus spoke plainly.

“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires.”

— John 8:44 (NIV)

This was not said to pagans.

It was said to religious people who rejected truth.

Scripture continues:

“This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.”

— 1 John 3:10 (NIV)

Let that settle.

The dividing line is obedience and love.

WHO YOU OBEY REVEALS WHO YOU SERVE

“Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?”

— Romans 6:16 (NIV)

You cannot serve Christ and cling to sin.

You cannot claim sonship and reject correction.

You cannot love darkness and belong to light.

“The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning.”

— 1 John 3:8 (NIV)

That is Scripture—not opinion.

THIS IS A CALL TO EXAMINE YOUR LIFE

This is not about condemnation.

This is about clarity.

“Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.”

— 2 Corinthians 13:5 (NIV)

Ask yourself honestly:

• What do I obey when no one is watching?

• What convicts me—and what doesn’t anymore?

• What do I defend that Scripture confronts?

• What fruit is consistently produced in my life?

Jesus warned:

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father.”

— Matthew 7:21 (NIV)

THE INVITATION

If this word exposes something — that is grace.

Sonship is not lost in a moment, but it is proven over time.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

— 1 John 1:9 (NIV)

You can change allegiance.

You can repent.

You can come into alignment.

You can walk as a true son.

“Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God.”

— Romans 8:14 (NIV)

This generation does not need softer messages.

It needs truth that saves.

You are either being shaped into the image of Christ

or conformed to the world.

Look deeply.

Be honest.

Choose who you will serve.

Because sonship is not claimed by words — it is revealed by obedience.
